This is a really lovely little beginner's set. Though I am a fountain pen enthusiast, I've not yet dipped into calligraphy, so I thought this would be a nice place to begin. In the box (no plastic, which is a nice bonus!) is the pen, and some nibs. The nibs are quite fragile, so be sure to follow the instructions on the bottom of the box to see how to fit them. It took me a minute to work it out, but it's easy enough once you get the hang of it. All the nibs come in this really nice little tin, and there are 5 different ones for a variety of calligraphic styles.I had a lot of fun giving it a go. It took a minute to get used to, but the nibs hold a good amount of ink before you need to dip them again, so it's quite easy to get the hang of. I've included my best attempt! This set doesn't quite brand itself as a 'beginner's set', but a little instruction booklet on perhaps the most basic calligraphy would have been really nice.If you were gifting this, do be sure to include a bottle of ink, as this set does not come with any.

I've always wanted to learn how to do not only calligraphy but also improve my handwriting so that it looked beautiful for when I wrote letters. Whilst you can do all sorts of beautiful fonts on the PC, there is something for utilising old skills as I now feel that receiving a handwritten letter is a real treat. As such I really want to push the boat out a bit more so that it not only has personal feelings within but also looks beautiful with the letter being handwritten as well as accompanied with a carefully crafted and wax sealed envelope. This pen set, allows you to create quite easily the style of writing that the monks of old used in their documents, its smooth, its easy to read and above all else adds a touch of class to anything you do. Add to this that the pen is a dip pen so you also have to carefully consider what you're writing also helps add a touch of authenticity. If you love writing or creating documents for people that look ancient, then this item will really help push your creativity. Magical.

This set is from a range of dip pen holders and nibs from Manuscript; this one is specifically for copperplate and shadowing. A nice touch is the all cardboard packaging, no plastic in sight. The nib holder is made of wood and the nibs of metal, plus a storage tin. The packaging is oversized and the weight plus rattling of the contents gives a clue that most of the content is air.Opening the box reveals the nib holders and the familiar D. Leonardt & Co storage tin for nibs. This is large enough to store far more than the five nibs that are supplied. Good on the one hand but if you buy more than one of these sets you'll soon have a number of identical tins.Leonardt nibs are of good quality, I've used them for years. But there's not much help for beginners with this set. No instructions or guides are provided, just a QR code and an instruction to go to the website. I also noticed on the box the text 'contents may vary'. So I will describe the nibs I received and which are pictured on the box but they may vary:#40 Steno - very flexible nib for copperplate style calligraphy#41 HIRO - very flexible nib for copperplate, more suitable for intermediate or advanced calligraphers#6 Scroll - creates parallel lines, used for decorative purposes, e.g. flourishing#IIIEF - stiffer nib, can be used for drawing or handwriting#33 - very soft and flexible general nib, giving great line variation for drawing or writingThe page that the QR code takes you to on the Manuscript website has generic information about dip pens, nothing specifically for these nibs. In fact I have three of these sets for different purposes and the QR codes on all of them are identical. I wonder who this set is targeted at - beginners really need more assistance in understanding which nib to use (plus some are harder to use without experience) and anyone who has used them before will know it's cheaper to buy the nibs separately.

Being a hobby I've started to get into heavily as of late, I thought I'd give these a go. I must state, I'm still a beginner, actually I hate to say it I'm not very good but I am not going to blame that on the tools, which in this case seem very good. You get a standard pen (Not really sure what it's called, a holder, stick or what) which you slot the nibs into. I did find the slotting a little bit stiff and you do need to be careful because the nibs are very delicate. Once in however, I dipped into my ink and started. I found it comfortable and quite effective however I was struggling a little with the up motion as it didn't always apply the ink. This could absolutely be user error but I haven't had this issue with every nib. You do get 5 nibs, 4 are very thin and you get a thicker one which I assume is for the shadowing.I think this is a fun, cheap and rewarding hobby to get into and this is a great set. I can imagine skilled people doing a lot with this and and £13.75 I think it's more than worth it. It doesn't contain any ink.
